Day 1 : Da Nang Arrival - Hoi An
Arrive at Danang Airport. Pick up and transfer to the hotel. Visit the Cham Sculpture Museum with more than 300 artefacts dating from the 4th to the 14th century. Attend a seminar on Cham sculpture, presented by Cham culture experts in Danang. Overnight in Hoi An.

Day 2 : Hoi An - My Son - Hoi An
Enjoy a day trip on rural roads to explore Tra Kieu & My Son, 70km from Danang. Tra Kieu (formerly called Simhapura) was the first capital city of Champa from the 4th to the 8th century. Visit Tra Kieu Church having a collection of valuable Cham artefacts dating from the 8th to the 10th century. Onwards to My Son, a World Heritage site recognized by UNESCO in 1999, the most extensive religious retreat of the Cham kingdom, dating from the 4th to the 13th century. The stunning ruins of dozens of tempe towers dedicated to Siva and other Hindu deities will remind you of Angkor in Cambodia, but the Cham's distinctive architecture used narrow bricks with no mortar.

Proceed to Hoi An, another World Heritage Site. Hoi An was a port of entry to the Cham kingdom, and later became an important trading center that was home to Chinese, Japanese, Dutch, and Portuguese merchants. Cars are not permitted in the old town, so you are free to take a leisurely stroll and visit restored houses and temples of the Chinese community, the Japanese covered bridge, markets, and handicraft workshops. Overnight in Hoi An.

Day 3 : Hoi An – Quang Ngai
After a leisurely morning exploring the town of Hoi An or enjoying the beautiful nearby beaches, leave Hoi An for Quang Ngai (120km). Along the way, you'll have a chance to see Cham towers that are rarely visited by tourists -- the unusual octagonal Bang An tower (built in the 12th century), the Chien Dan towers (built in the 11th century) and adjoining sculpture museum, and the Khuong My towers (built in the 10th century). Overnight in Quang Ngai.

Day 4 : Quang Ngai – Qui Nhon
Leave Quang Ngai for Qui Nhon (175km), the heart of the Cham kingdom of Vijaya from the 10th to the 15th century. The remains of walls, moats, roads, statues, and temples (Thap Thap & Canh Tien) can be found inside the ruins of the capital city of Cha Ban. The Duong Long Towers (built in the 13th century) and the Banh It Towers (built in the 12th century) are also worth visiting for their exquisite architecture. Overnight in Qui Nhon.

Day 5 : Qui Nhon – Nha Trang
Before leaving Qui Nhon, attend a talk on the restoration of Cham brick structures presented by Cham culture experts in Qui Nhon. Join an inspection trip guided by experts to the newly-restored towers of Hung Thanh (built in the 13th century).

In the afternoon, drive to Nha Trang (250km) through beautiful green rice fields, and across mountain ridges with thrilling vistas of the islands and blue waters of the East Sea. Stop at the Nhan Tower perched on a hill with a panoramic view of Tuy Hoa Town. On arrival in Nha Trang, visit the temple to the goddess Po Nagar, a group of Cham towers on a hillock facing the picturesque fishing harbor at the mouth of the Cai River. The temple of Po Nagar was the southern equivalent to the sanctuary of My Son, with towers constructed from the 8th to the 12th century. Dinner & Overnight in Nha Trang.

Day 6 : Nha Trang – Phan Rang
Nha Trang is Vietnam's most charming coastal city, with white sand beaches, fascinating islands and year-round dry weather. Rest up from your journeys with a quiet morning to by the pool side or splashing in the turquoise water of the . In the afternoon, transfer to Phan Rang, formerly part of the Cham region called Pan Duranga (110km) and visit the Hoa Lai Towers (built in the 9th century) and the Po Klong Garai Towers (built in the 13th century). The Po Klong Garai Towers are not only the best preserved of the Cham temples but are still used by the Cham during the Kate Festival held around October. Overnight in Phan Rang.

Day 7 : Phan Rang – Phan Thiet
In the morning, we'll pay a visit to Cham villages, where you'll see centuries-old crafts such as brocade weaving at My Nghiep Village and earthenware making at Bau Truc Village. Visit the Porome Tower (built in the 14th century), one of the most recent Cham towers. Leave Phan Rang for Phan Thiet (150km) with a stop-over at the Phan Thanh commune. See the collections of Cham royal families and explore the religious diversity of Cham people at Hindu Mai Lanh Hamlet and Muslim Chau Hanh Hamlet. Overnight in Phan Thiet.

Day 8 : Phan Thiet
Hidden among coconut trees, a chain of seaside resorts attracts every taste and all ages. Spend the whole day relaxing at a resort, or roaming over coloured sand dunes at Hon Rom. The coast offers spectacular views at sunset along the Cape Ne beach drive. Golfing at an 18-hole course is optional. Overnight in Phan Thiet.

Day 9 : Phan Thiet – Ho Chi Minh City
Before leaving for Ho Chi Minh City (200km), visit the Po Sanu Towers (built in the 8th century), considered the last Cham towers on the central coastal plains. The tour ends after lunch in Ho Chi Minh City.

 

 


  • Hue, the capital of the Nguyen Dynasty, lies about 40 km north of Danang, so it's easy to add a 2-day tour of the Citadel and royal tombs to your itinerary.
